What different hot water systems are available?
Hot water heaters are the preferred way for most Australians to heat their hot water. This is obvious, with water heating accounting for up to 21% of energy consumption in Australia.
The two basic types of hot water system currently available in Australia are storage systems or continuous flow systems (instantaneous systems).
Whichever hot water system you choose, you have a variety of options to choose from to heat your water. These include: solar, gas (available in LPG or natural gas) and electricity.
How do hot water systems work?
Within a hot water system, water is stored within an insulated tank for use whenever it is needed.
These systems can either be run through a mains pressure system or using a gravity feed (aka constant pressure hot water tank).
Your hot water is delivered at a similar flow rate and consistency as your cold water. This ensures more than one outlet can be turned on without adversely affecting the water pressure.
A mains pressure storage tank is usually located at ground level, either inside or outside of your home.
Gravity feed (aka constant pressure)
Using this system, hot water is delivered at a lower rate than using a mains pressure tank, from a tank located in your home’s roof. The water pressure rate depends on the height difference between the tank and your point of use.
Gravity feed systems are most commonly used in older properties and properties which are not connected to a mains pressure system.

4 questions to ask before choosing a hot water system
Wondering what type of hot water system will serve you best? As every hot water system and home is different, there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. In most cases, however, there are various options which may suit you and your family’s needs. When choosing a hot water system, the best approach is to first identify your needs, as well as any factors that may limit your choices.
Here’s what you’ll need to answer before you spend a dollar.
'What fuel is available?'
For most Australian households, this is a question of whether or not gas is available. If you do not currently have a solar hot water system, natural gas is the most efficient and cost-effective fuel for your hot water system.
'How much water do you need?'
The number of people living in your home and your average water consumption will determine the demand and capacity your family requires. Generally, smaller households (1-3 people) will benefit from continuous flow gas systems, or heat pump electric hot water systems.
Whereas, larger households (4 people or more) with access to gas will benefit most from a storage tank hot water heater.
'How far away is the hot water system from your taps?'
The hot water system you choose largely depends on the size of your home. There are two main reasons for this. Firstly, heat dissipates as it travels through the network of pipes.
And secondly, if taps are too far away from your hot water system, you’ll waste a lot of time waiting for the water to heat up.
'What is the best option for a hot water system?'
At Brian Thurtell Plumbing, we are experts when it comes to determining which hot water system will be ideal for your needs and budget.
We will take factors such as climate, environment and your budget when recommending the perfect hot water system to suit you. In our experience though, your best choice for a hot water system is either natural gas or LPG.
There are several reasons for this. Firstly, a gas hot water system will produce less greenhouse gas emissions than
electric hot water systems.
Secondly, depending on your location, gas hot water systems have lower usage rates than electricity. This means they are by far the most cost-effective option over the long term.
Which is the best company for a hot water system?

Common hot water plumbing repair issues
Not enough hot water: This extremely common problem can be solved turning up the tank’s thermostat setting. Be careful not to turn the temperature too high though, as it may scold.
No hot water at all: If you can’t get any hot water when you turn on the taps and you have a gas-powered hot water system, it is likely that the pilot light has gone out. This can be due to a faulty thermocouple or a faulty pilot light control switch.
Smelly water: Hot water which carries a bad smell is infected with bacteria. This is usually a rotten egg smell. This can be solved by flushing the tank and filling it with a solution of water and hydrogen peroxide.
A noisy water tank: If your water tank makes a noise, it could be caused by several problems. The most likely is your tank has sediment at the bottom, and the heating element is burning the sediment. Another common reason for noise is that the water tank is burning out.
A leaking water tank: Once your tank begins leaking, it’s time to replace it. Leaks, even if they are small, cannot be ignored. At the first sign of a leak, contact us for a replacement.
At Brian Thurtell Plumbing, our highly experienced team can tackle all of these problems with ease. If you notice any of the above issues, simply call or email us today.
Reliable hot water system maintenance tips
Here are some maintenance tips to keep your hot water system in top condition.
Regularly inspect the system for wear or cracks – Choose the same date each month, and thoroughly inspect your hot water system.
Search for cracks, wear and water leakage – Spending five minutes each month can save you thousands in the long run. By catching small issues you can fix them before they turn into big, expensive headaches.
Turn your tank system off if you are going away – If you’re going on holiday for a few weeks, it can be helpful to turn your hot water system off. If you don’t, the system will continue heating your water, even though you aren’t using it. Turning the system off will extend its life and save you money in gas or electricity.
Inspect the tank’s relief valve – To inspect this valve, you’ll need to consult the manual which came with your system (or search for the model online if you don’t have it handy).
As the relief valve is designed to relieve excess pressure, it must work properly. We recommend you check the relief valve every six months.
Have your hot water system inspected once a year – Don’t wait until there’s an emergency you can’t handle. To prevent costly, frustrating repairs, simply get the experts at Brian Thurtell Plumbing to check your hot water system once a year.
We can pinpoint any potential issues before they become major problems. And, we’ll ensure your hot water system is running at its best.
