Roof plumbing

Roof plumbing is also commonly referred to as stormwater plumbing.

This highly specialised service includes everything that relates to the construction and maintenance of drainage systems. The ultimate goal of roof plumbing is to ensure storm water is collected from the roof, to be disposed of away from the foundations of your home or business.

Therefore, a roof plumber must be an expert in roofing systems, waterproofing, as well as guttering and downpipe installation and maintenance. At Brian Thurtell Plumbing we are the number one roof plumbing Central Coast provider.

Put simply, it is our job to ensure your storm water drainage system is working properly, and can keep your whole home or business safe.

How can you ensure my gutters won’t leak into my house?

Few things are as frustrating to homeowners as water damage. Water damage is a very sinister issue, which few people notice until it becomes a much bigger problem.

Fortunately, there are some simple measures our experienced plumbers can take to ensure water from your gutters will not leak into your home.

Firstly, we can help you to maintain your stormwater drainage system, to ensure it is in proper working order.

Secondly, we can give your gutters a thorough cleaning. We do this by ensuring your gutters are completely free of leaf litter and debris.

Thirdly, we will help ensure your gutters are properly angled to funnel any excess water into the downspout. This way, we prevent water from running down the side of your house and collecting at the base, which may put your home’s foundations at risk.

Finally, we can waterproof your roof to prevent roof leakage through its structural openings.

Waterproofing

Waterproofing your roof is a vital maintenance task to ensure moisture does not travel to other parts of your home, and potentially cause severe damage to the rest of the structure.

If left unchecked, a leak may develop. This could lead to a wide range of serious and costly consequences. Some of the most serious consequences may include: plasterboard decay, mould, rising damp, and even structural damage.

This task involves combining various materials to prevent water from compromising the structural integrity of your home or business’ roof. Its chief purpose is to protect the roof against hydrostatic pressure which is exerted by moisture in its liquid state.

Why do I need a plumber to waterproof my roof?

Waterproofing is a highly specialised task. As such, it offers many risks to the DIY enthusiast, ranging from practical safety to the risk of damage – requiring costly repairs. If you notice a leak or general wear and tear in your roof, we recommend contacting the waterproofing specialists at Brian Thurtell Plumbing right away.

Our experienced team of professionals can waterproof your roof, so it complies with the Building Code of Australia, and is fully compliant with the Australian Standard (AS3740).

This extremely high standard is your personal guarantee that your roof is waterproofed to the highest level of workmanship possible.

Just part of the reason we are the number one choice for downpipe repairs and roof plumbing on the Central Coast.

Our simple waterproofing process

Waterproofing a roof is a very complex task. It involves various intricate steps to successfully complete. The typical roof waterproofing process involves four steps. These include:

1

'Cleaning the substrate'

All successful roof waterproofing jobs require excellent adhesion. Therefore, cleaning is just as important as the correct application of the waterproofing solution itself.

Typically, the substrate is cleaned through pressure washing. This eliminates so-called “bond breakers” and exposes parts of the roof needing treatment (which may not be visible to the naked eye).

2

'Priming the surface'

This step improves the adhesion of the membrane. Applying a primer will also block any bleeding of the bituminous oils from the roof structure.

Before applying the primer, our team will ensure the surface is completely dry. To reduce drying time, they will use an air compressor or torches.

3

'Treatment of details'

Our experts treat all details extremely carefully. And only after this step is completed will they continue the application of the liquid waterproofing membrane. Such details include: interior and exterior corners, wall to floor corners, metal flashing terminations, and penetrations like pipes, vents, drains and more.

These are treated with reinforcing fabric, which is embedded into the liquid waterproofing membrane.

4

'Applying the liquid membrane to the roof surface'

This final step is absolutely crucial. It can also be the most time consuming, as most roofs require the coating of the liquid membrane to be applied in two or more successive layers.

Are you looking for cost-effective, professional roof plumbing on the Central Coast? If so, the expert Brian Thurtell Plumbing team can perform the above steps, to ensure your roof is properly waterproofed.

Guttering and downpipes

Gutters and downpipes are an essential component of your home’s roofing. Without them, your home may be exposed to severe water damage. This is very difficult and costly to fix.

We can help prevent this by expertly installing and maintaining your roof’s guttering and downpipes. This will ensure that your home or business is protected from water damage for decades to come.

A downpipe (also known as a rainwater pipe or downspout) is a pipe which is attached to the side of your home. It is designed to collect rainwater from your roof.

The water that accumulates in your downpipe can either go into a stormwater drain, or be collected to be repurposed on your property, to water your garden for example.

Your home’s gutters are located beneath the edge of your roof. Gutters are a shallow trough which carry water into your downpipes. It is very important to have your gutters inspected regularly.

If left unmaintained, leaf litter can accumulate in your gutters and create a blockage. A blockage will prevent rainwater from running smoothly through your downpipes. This can lead to increased water build up, which can lead to severe roof damage.

To solve this problem, call the experts at Brian Thurtell Plumbing today. We install, maintain and repair downpipes and guttering on the Central Coast.

Do you connect downpipes to a rainwater tank?

Yes. In fact, this is absolutely essential. In order to harvest rainwater, you must connect pipework to your downpipe from your roof gutter to your rainwater tank. This ensures any water can flow through without obstruction.

Our team can advise you on planning how you can effectively connect your downpipes directly to your rainwater tank. This will help you determine which materials you will need. When connecting downpipes to your rainwater tank, there are two main pipework system options to choose from.

These include:

Dry system (aka above ground pipework): Through this system, pipework travels directly from your downpipes to the top of your tank, or:
Wet system (aka underground pipework): Through this system, downpipes lead underground and lead directly to your water tank, located away from your home or property

Rainwater storage tanks

Your rainwater tank is designed to capture and harvest water gathered from your roof. You can use the collected water around your home or garden, an eco friendly choice that saves you money.

Here are a few factors to consider before installing a rainwater tank on your property.

The average rainwater tank:

  • Can hold at least 2,500 litres of rainwater.
  • Can be connected to at least 75 percent of your available roof area.
  • Has an energy efficient pump and water distribution system.
  • Can save you up to 40 percent of your drinking water supply (this saving equates to approximately $200 per year or 96,000 litres of water).
  • Supplies rainwater to at least one toilet and washing machine.
  • Provides you and your family with a fail-safe water supply.

While it may look like a simple job, rainwater tanks are quite complex to install.

So, why not get Brian Thurtell Plumbing, the leading installer of rainwater tanks on the Central Coast, to handle the job?

Can I use a rainwater tank for my regular water needs?

Water is the most precious natural resource we have. Unfortunately, we tend to take it for granted. Within Australia’s dry climate, water is in limited supply. So, it’s not surprising that many homeowners are deciding to install rainwater tanks.

Depending on the size of your tank and your needs, your rainwater tank can definitely be used for your regular water needs.
